How to Play Bocce

Before Kan-Jam or corn hole became summertime classics, bocce reigned supreme as the outdoor game of choice. Somewhat related to lawn bowling, it’s a simple outdoor game for players of all ages, but how are you actually supposed to play bocce ball?
Equipment/ Playing Area
A bocce ball set comes with eight balls in two colors (four of each), plus a smaller target ball called a pallino. Believe it or not, bocce really does exist as a regulation game, though most have likely played it in their backyards. In regulation play, the action happens on a 13’x91’ court, though you’d be lucky to have a yard that size! As a general rule, try for a relatively spacious and flat surface, so as to not hinder game play.
Teams
Bocce is a solid standby game for cookouts. While you can play one on one, bocce is more engaging with at least four people in on the action (two per team). Get up to eight people involved for faster gameplay (ideal if time is running short or lots of people want a chance to play). Keep in mind: there are only four balls per team, so more players means fewer balls thrown by each player per frame.
Gameplay/Scoring
Bocce is relatively easy to play. The balls are small and the game is compact, so anyone can play. Pick your teams and start by tossing the pallino toward the center court (or back lawn) before throwing/bowling each frame. The game is similar to bowling in a few ways, from the underhand throw of each game ball to the goal of aiming at a target (the pallino, instead of pins). Teams take turns tossing one game ball at a time with one goal in mind: get closest to the pallino without touching it or opposing players’ balls. The team with the ball farthest from the pallino leads off the next rotation in the frame. Each frame concludes when all eight balls have been thrown, and one point is awarded to the team that gets closest to the pallino. Regulation play typically specifies that the winning team earn at least 12 points (resulting in 12+ frames of play), but casual play can be flexible to meet your needs.
