The Art of John Shook: Zone 28’s Laser Tag Experience

You step out onto the arena and the room is dark. Suddenly a flash of light...then another. Otherworldly sound effects creep in and BAM! Enemy fire. You never quite know what to expect from a game of laser tag, but the ambiance is just as important as the game itself. That’s why Zone 28 partnered with local artist, John Shook, to create the spacey vibe of our laser tag arena.
John Shook: Diverse Artist
He was born in a small town near Pittsburgh...
Scratch that.
John Shook is a local artist like no other, a huge draw for our vision of the new Zone 28 laser tag experience. He specializes in diversified media and subject matter, delighting in being able to create artwork which is beautiful and thought-provoking out of just about anything. Want watercolor? How about airbrush art? Shook shakes things up with subjects as extreme as tribal and alien artwork. And with a previous life in animated figures and moving show elements (think amusement parks), the artist also pushes the boundaries in the 3D space, with projects ranging from computer-generated renderings to hand-molded clay. Who better to give life to an intergalactic space battle?
The Art of Our Laser Tag Arena
When imagining our Cyber Quest Laser Tag arena, the Zone 28 team knew it needed to be special. Laser tag is all about adventure and action mixed with just a little bit of spookiness. You’re not battling your friend in an indoor arena, you’re fending off alien creatures on Mars...or at least, that’s how we want it to feel. Enter: John Shook.
From our staging area to the battle arena, Shook created an airbrushed world outside our own. Depictions of alien foes adorn the walls of our staging area, complete with renderings of the inner wiring and computer systems of a spaceship. Moving through to the vesting area, where players suit up to do battle, it’s just like looking out the windows of the ship, and you get the first views of the planetary landscape. Finally, when players are unleashed into the battle arena, Earth seems lightyears away, and can be seen in the far off distance of Shook’s wall-to-wall murals. Flying saucers are approaching as you and your team navigate the rough terrain. Pair this with outstanding lighting effects...magic.
