The Importance of Team Building: The 3 Cs

Team building. The term strikes fear in the hearts of many employees. Sometimes, team building activities aren't as productive as we hope, but when done in ways that mesh with company culture, team building actually has the potential to be beneficial to employees and company success by enhancing communication, collaboration and celebration.
Communication
Team building activities can enhance team communication. This is especially important from a top-down perspective. Admit it, it’s hard to have an honest conversation with upper management when you think you’re low on the totem pole. Let’s say that your company breaks into groups, each of which is charged with providing solutions to a problem. The purpose behind the exercise is to get everyone talking in an open discussion.
Employees, in this instance, are empowered to present ideas or even disagree with management. Open discourse in a safe setting provides a confidence boost for the regular work setting, and management and employees can work as one.
Collaboration
The nature of your company might mean that employees often work in their own little silos, rarely interacting or getting fired up about a new idea. Maybe employees just aren’t well acquainted. Team building initiatives provide opportunities for individuals who rarely cross paths (i.e. sales and in-house employees) to work side by side. By engaging in a fun activity designed to help employees get to know one another (sporting event, networking), your team gets stronger interpersonally. As a result, when opportunities do arise to work together, everyone settles in easily and creativity flows almost effortlessly (and individuals may actively seek one another out later).
Celebration
“We work hard to play hard.” This is a common saying because it rings true. Your company successfully executed a complex project. Maybe you landed a major business account. Rewards in the working world are few and far between, aside from the occasional “Thanks” or “Good job.” It’s up to individuals and sometimes their teams to celebrate those little professional wins that make up the day-to-day job. That’s why it’s important to take time out to enjoy the moment. Recreational opportunities or something as simple as an evening happy hour provide fuel to move forward into a successful future.
