Tips for Planning Your Office Holiday Party

As hard as it is to admit, the holiday season is right around the corner. Plenty of shops have already started putting out their winter merchandise and you could swear you just heard a carol on the radio. Like time and tide, the holidays are unstoppable—and they’ll be here before you know it.
If you’ve been charged with planning your office’s annual holiday party, it’s time to start now. But where to begin? How to account for everyone’s very different tastes and ideas of fun? Sure, you could just buy a few deli platters, make a festive playlist on Spotify and call it day, but what’s special about that? Here are few tips to get you moving toward a holiday party your coworkers (and hopefully bosses) will never forget.
Start Planning Your Office Holiday Party Early
It might be hard to believe, but as we mentioned above, now is the time to start planning your end of the year shindig. Venues and caterers fill up pretty quickly, and you don’t want to be left in the lurch. Get a head count as soon as possible and roughly determine how much food and drink you’ll need. Even if you’re not sure how many to expect, highball it and get in touch with a venue right away.
If you need to talk to someone about putting down a deposit, make sure you’ve done this prior to booking a venue. You don’t want to lose out on the perfect spot because the budget committee couldn’t cut a check in time.
Accounting for Everyone's Taste at an Office Party
This is far easier said than done. Let’s be honest. No matter what you do, Janet from HR will find something to complain about. But in all seriousness, trying to throw the perfect party for everyone in your office will probably drive you crazy. When you’re planning the office party, opt for a venue with plenty of options when it comes to food, drink and entertainment. Variety is the spice of life after all.
Another great way to handle this is by putting the decision into your coworkers’ hands. Once you’ve selected a venue, take stock of all the dining and entertainment options and let everyone else vote on what they’d want to do. For instance, if your venue offers bowling, laser tag, arcade games and escape rooms (does such a place exist?), have your office fill out a survey and rank their favorite activities. This way everyone has their say and it takes the wind right out of Janet’s sails.
