Become a Bar Trivia Master

Everyone has that friend who seems to know just about everything. Maybe that’s you! Even if you don’t know who won every football game in history or the names of every presidents’ dogs, it’s easy to pick up diverse knowledge and become a bar trivia master. Here’s the scoop.
Study Trivia
People learn trivia by reading, casual observation in social situations and by watching TV. While you might not have to answer in the form of a question when your moment comes, taking your queue from these sources might help.
-
Want to join in on trivia night? Attend a few sessions at your favorite bar for practice, or simply to see how the bar in question structures the activity. Paying attention to small details now could reveal such aspects as the types of questions frequently asked, whether certain categories are more common or if clues are often hidden in questions.
-
“This is Jeop…” Okay, you know the rest. TV is a treasure trove of random knowledge, especially from long-standing game shows. By regularly tuning in, you’ll learn a bit from the most popular categories, providing at least a basic knowledge (even if something isn’t technically your strong suit).
Start with What You Know and Like
Between attending trivia sessions and watching game shows (Why not download a trivia app, too?), becoming a trivia whiz seems daunting. Start with a point of interest.
-
Read up even more on favorite topics. If you’re really into a subject (i.e. world history, filmmaking, etc.), drink up every drop with what you read. And if it’s current events-related, you’re bound to have new information to learn each day, making things fun. In this way, you’ll become your team’s expert on that subject area.
-
Foster a budding interest. Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn about, or even a hobby you could perfect? Use this as a starting point in becoming a bar trivia master. For instance, maybe you’re fascinated by the art at museums, but don’t really know much about the genres, techniques or history behind landmark pieces. It’s the perfect opportunity to study up and broaden your knowledge base.
Build a Solid Team
Unlike some quiz shows, bar trivia sessions are team activities. Depending on the rules of specific trivia games, bring along three or four friends to join in on the fun.
The benefit of having so many brains at work is that you all have different strengths. Use that to your advantage. Make a point of selecting friends with diverse areas of expertise, different ages and genders in order to best answer questions on a wide range of topics. After all, you wouldn’t want to all be 30-year-old, sports-minded guys with the same knowledge set and perspectives. Grab a history buff, a pop culture savant, an artsy type..and yes, a sports nut. The key: well-roundedness.
