How Does a Laser Tag Phaser Work?

Lasers are just plain cool. There’s no denying that. If you’re like us, your favorite use for this futuristic tech is probably a round or two (or three, or four) of laser tag. The concept of the game is pretty simple, you shoot your phaser at your opponent to score points until one team is the winner. But have you ever wondered how a laser tag phaser works? Let’s take a closer look!
What Makes Up the Laser?
There are a number of different styles of laser tag phasers. Some use actual lasers while others uses LED lights. These lasers or lights are controlled by a mechanism at the head of the phaser. When you pull the trigger, a condensed laser beam or beam of light shoots out. When this beam hits a target, such as another player’s vest, it sends signals to that player’s phaser to let them know they’ve been hit. Typically, this freezes the other player’s phaser and they must recharge for a few seconds before being able to shoot anyone themselves. Once you hit a target, your own phaser will also record the hit.
These beams are often invisible and operate like a radio signal. That’s how they communicate the information and also share with a leaderboard that records who made the shot, who got hit and how many point to award. Pro tip: You actually have a better chance of hitting your target
Is Laser Tag Dangerous?
Because most phasers use LEDs and radio signals, laser tag phasers are perfectly safe. The “laser beam” you see is just a beam of light and no more dangerous than having a light shone in your eyes. Remember those laser pointers everyone was obsessed with in the late 90s? Yeah, our phasers aren’t even that bright. However, we don’t advocate shining any lights in anyone’s face! If you’re concerned about your sensitivity to light, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor before heading into the laser tag arena.
The only part of laser tag that’s dangerous is not following the rules. Running, jumping and climbing on fixtures aren’t allowed. That’s to make sure you stay safe and fun throughout the competition. Don’t worry, there’s a staff member to go over everything before you head in.
