The Escape Zone at Zone 28

Zone 28 has two escape rooms in Pittsburgh — Hidden Below, an abandoned coal mine you reach by an elevator that feels like it is taking you into the ground, and Room 113, a roadside motel room you have to get out of before whoever put you there comes back. Both run one hour for 3 to 10 players at $25.00 a person, and booking all ten spots takes $50.00 off and makes the room private. The Escape Zone is open Wednesday to Sunday, 12pm to 8pm.

What It Costs

Per person, per room - and a full room costs less per head

Three players minimum, ten maximum, per room. If you book fewer than ten, other people may be put in the room with you. Booking all ten spots is the only way to guarantee a private game — and it is also when the $50 discount applies, so a full room works out at $200 rather than $250.

When The Escape Zone Is Open

The bowling, arcade and laser tag run later — until 10pm most nights and midnight on Friday and Saturday — so an early escape room and a late everything else is the usual way people do it.

Hidden Below

An abandoned mine, and one hour before the air runs out.

The once-thriving Harmar mining community in Pittsburgh, PA has sat desolate for over a century — an abandoned relic of a bygone era of grit, grime, and tough-as-nails coal miners who courted danger for a day's wage. While researching the old town, you stumbled across a short entry in an unnamed miner's diary, dated May 21, 1893: eight men did not come up that day, and the Canary Crew had just finished stashing the last of Carnegie's secret treasure before sealing it off.

Could the treasure still be down there? You could not get the question out of your head, so you gathered a group of adventurous friends and went into the mine to find out. You get there in an elevator that feels like it takes you down into the ground — the room starts before you are through the door.

This is the one to pick if you have younger players in the group. It is an adventure, not a horror story.

Room 113

A motel room off Route 66, and one hour before the killer comes back.

It was supposed to be the perfect road trip — Route 66 through America's heartland — until "heartland" turned out to mean desert wasteland. With the needle near empty you pull into a filling station that looks like it has been standing since the invention of the automobile. There is no attendant anywhere. One of your group goes round the back looking for a bathroom. You hear a scream, then something slams into the back of your head.

You all wake up locked in a motel room, nobody knows how you got there, and it is clear from what is in the room that you need to be out before whoever put you there comes back.

A warning, and we mean it: Room 113 contains fake blood and fake body parts and may not be appropriate for younger audiences. If you are bringing children, book Hidden Below.

How Booking Works

Book online or call. The escape rooms are the one attraction at Zone 28 that is genuinely worth reserving — there are two rooms and a hundred and twenty minutes of slots a day, and weekends go.

Reserve at least three days ahead for a guaranteed spot. Friday to Sunday, call 412-828-1100 for walk-in availability — walk-ins are taken when a room is free, but never promised.

A deposit is required at the time of booking, and deposits are non-refundable.

If anyone in your group is 12 or younger, eight tickets must be purchased. That is the rule for the room whatever your headcount, so a family of four with a ten-year-old pays for eight.

Groups And Team Building

Team building — $20 a person. A one-hour escape room, Room 113 or Hidden Below, up to 10 players per room. Minimum 10 guests, any day we are open. A host stays with your group. Team building packages are for companies only, and for adults only — no children.

Escape rooms put a team on the same problem rather than at the same table, which is the whole point of a team day. Two rooms means a group of twenty can run both at once and compare times afterwards.

A 12% service charge applies to any reservation that includes food.

While You Are Here

The Escape Zone sits inside a 50,000 square foot complex, all indoors and air-conditioned. Under the same roof: 33 bowling lanes, an 88+ game arcade including two virtual reality games, a 3,000 square foot laser tag arena for up to 30 players, the Rail House Restaurant, the End Zone Sports Bar and an outdoor Beer Park with cornhole and bocce.

Because the Escape Zone closes at 8pm and everything else does not, the easy plan is a room first and the rest of the building after.
